HIGHLAND, Wis (WRCO / WRCE) – For her senior exit project at Highland High School, Katherine Tarrell set out to do something meaningful—and personal. She wrote and illustrated her very own children’s book.

“As part of the project, we have to choose something that gives back to the community,” said Tarrell. “So I decided to share a story about kindness, compassion, and empathy.”

Her book, titled IncREDible Friends, was inspired by her Grandma Jean and her own experiences growing up with red hair. The story highlights the beauty of individuality and encourages readers to embrace their unique traits.

“I wanted to tell a story based on my life—sharing some of my experiences and insecurities,” Katherine explained. “My goal is to let others know they’re not alone in how they feel, and that we’re all incredible in our own way.”

A key component of the senior project is finding a mentor in the student’s chosen field. Katherine connected with Kristin Mitchell, owner and publisher of Little Creek Press in Mineral Point.

“This program is such a great way for professionals to give back,” said Mitchell. “Katherine is a perfect example of how personal experiences can be used to uplift others. It’s an honor to support students in a field as complex and creative as publishing.”

Katherine devoted more than 150 hours to the project, both writing and illustrating the book herself. Her hard work is already making a difference—IncREDible Friends is resonating with young readers throughout southwest Wisconsin.

She has been visiting local schools to share her story and hopes her message reaches those who need it most.

“The heart of my book is really about reminding people they’re never truly alone,” Katherine said. “Even when you feel isolated, there are others who feel the same way. I want readers to know that—and to know how incredible they are.”
