MADISON, Wis (WMDX) – About 1,000 striking nurses will be back to work after coming to an agreement with Meriter Hospital.

The nurses have been on strike for several days, calling for enhanced staffing, pay and safety. Amber Anderson, who bargained on behalf of the nurse’s union, celebrated their victory while acknowledging that efforts still need to be made toward safety and security.

“We fought for every penny they had to offer. We won an 8% increase across the board over two years,” Anderson said. “Unfortunately, while we were hopeful for more firm language that leads to action from the hospital, we were unable to come to an agreement on how to put that into contractual language. With that being said, we were able to win new language to continue to build upon that provides an opportunity to collaboratively work toward safety and security solutions.”
