MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Civic Media) – Former U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett sharply criticized a Trump administration proposal to close the U.S. embassy in Luxembourg, warning it would create a strategic opening for China in Europe.

Speaking on The Earl Ingram Show, Barrett said, “The happiest person in Luxembourg, if that happens, is the Chinese ambassador,” arguing that China is poised to fill any diplomatic void left by the United States.

Barrett, who served as ambassador until early 2025, emphasized that U.S. withdrawal from key posts allows China to expand its influence, particularly in economic and diplomatic arenas, and called the move “insane” given the global competition between the two powers.

The Trump administration is considering closing nearly 30 U.S. embassies and consulates, including Luxembourg, as part of a plan to cut the State Department budget by almost half. Barrett warned that such isolationist policies undermine longstanding alliances and diminish America’s global leadership, especially as China strengthens its ties with Luxembourg and the European Union.

The proposal has sparked concern among former foreign policy experts, who argue that retreating from the world stage would have lasting consequences for U.S. interests and influence.
