The Wisconsin Supreme Court issued an opinion Friday morning that the state’s top election official can stay at her post.

The court’s seven justices were unanimous in affirming that Meagan Wolfe, administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, can remain on the job.

Wolfe’s nonpartisan role is to oversee all the elections clerks in the state. Currently, there’s about 1,800 clerks in Wisconsin and their primary task is to run elections at the local level.

Wolfe wasn’t nominated for another term on the commission, but she wasn’t fired either. The bipartisan Elections Commission has the power to do both of those things.

The core of the issue is a long-running standoff between Republican state lawmakers and Wolfe. GOP legislators have targeted Wolfe for years. They tried to fire her themselves in 2023 over false claims of election fraud in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

According to the Associated Press. Wolfe was first appointed to her role in 2018 and was confirmed to a four-year term by the state Senate in 2019.
