GREEN BAY, Wis (WGBW) – As a result of the Trump Administration’s budget bill recently passed by both the Senate and the House and signed into law by President Donald Trump, over three million Americans will lose Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. That’s according to Wisconsin’s Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin.

Baldwin was in Green Bay this past weekend, touring Emplify Bellin’s emergency department and discussing the impacts of the Trump budget bill on Medicaid recipients. During the press conference, she mentioned the increased food insecurity she is seeing across Wisconsin.

“I’ve been traveling the state and visiting food pantries who are already strapped at their capacity. (They’re) barely able to meet the hunger needs in their communities,” Baldwin said. “If people lose their nutrition assistance, their food stamps, and are no longer able to purchase nutritious food for their families at grocery stores. They are then going to have to rely on food pantries and food banks. And, again, they’re at capacity.”

About 705,000 Wisconsin residents rely on SNAP benefits for food assistance. Of those receiving assistance, 270,000 are children and 108,000 are senior citizens.

All of Wisconsin’s Republican representatives in the U.S. Senate and House, including Senator Ron Johnson (R-Oshkosh) and Representatives Tony Wied (R-De Pere) and Glenn Grothman (R-Fond du Lac), voted to approve the budget bill.
