As the temperature and the weather improve, many consumers start thinking about home improvement projects. Before starting any improvements it is good to plan in advance. Michelle Reinen is with The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).
Before hiring a contractor be sure to get references from reliable sources.
Reinen suggests when at a home show get information from various contractors and compare them.
Make sure the agreement with a contractor is on paper instead of verbally.
Before making any requested payments to the contractor, Michelle Reinen says that consumers should be sure work is done correctly and everything is done legally.
If you are a victim of a home improvement scam, or any scam, you can contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline by phone at 1-800-422-7128 or by email at [email protected].
